Do you ever think about what stress is costing you?
Let’s start with your health.
Any doctor will tell you that stress is terrible for your health.
Most disease and illness is caused, or exacerbated, by stress.
Stress is particularly bad for your heart.
But what does it actually cost?
CBS News reported the average total cost of a severe heart attack–including direct and indirect costs–is about $1 million. This includes direct costs, which are charges for hospitals, doctors and prescription drugs, and the indirect costs include lost productivity and time away from work.
The average cost of a less severe heart attack is about $760,000.
And although these costs are mitigated by health insurance coverage, for most people, the cost of being sick is massive.
This may seem like an extreme example, but heart disease is an eventual reality for a lot of people. It’s still the leading cause of death in the U.S., and most of us can’t afford to be sick.
Have trouble sleeping? That might be costing you a few thousand dollars a year too.
A study in the journal, SLEEP, reported the annual per-person insomnia-related costs averaged $5,010 for individuals with an insomnia syndrome, $1,431 for those with insomnia symptoms.
Heart disease and insomnia are only two of many stress induced/stress-related illness and diseases.
Stress contributes to anxiety, depression, asthma, obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, migraine headaches, gastrointestinal disorders, eczema, acne, psoriasis, hair loss, erectile dysfunction, and many other conditions.
It slows wound healing and accelerates the aging process.

In any other context, the word “underwhelming” would be very unimpressive. But when describing Access Meditation it’s both accurate and remarkable.
We like to use this word to describe the practice because the demand on mind and body is infinitesimally minimal. It settles the mind and body into a state of deep rest and relaxation automatically and spontaneously without any effort, focus or concentration, or attempting to control the mind or suppress thoughts. The experience is the exact opposite of feeling overwhelmed.
It’s through revisiting this daily underwhelming experience that reconditions the mind and body from the impact of decades of accumulated stress. This results in massive improvements in our mental and physical health and wellbeing, but also allows us to be incredibly more adaptable to the demands we face in our personal and professional lives.
